Pyramid
lake is the largest remnant of ancient Lake Lahontan that covered
much of northwestern Nevada. Located thirty five miles northeast
of Reno the lake is in a remote desert region. After the drive
through the desert you are rewarded by a spectacular view of
the lake. In 1925 a Paiute named Johnny Skimmerhorn caught
the world's record cutthroat here; a 41-pounder. Today fishing
is still popular but be sure you follow all the regulations
and get a tribal permit. In Sutcliffe, you'll find the Pyramid
Lake Marina, with a visitor center and museum, as well as stores
and services. Pyramid lake makes a great day trip form Reno.
Avoid the dirt roads unless you have four wheel drive and bring
plenty of drinking water.
