Boulder City is located just over 20 miles outside Las Vegas, and just a few miles from amazing Hoover Dam. With only 15,000 residents, the small town charm is everywhere and the atmosphere is one of family oriented fun.

Boulder City was originally built in 1931 to house workers who were building the dam. Gambling and alcohol were prohibited in the city, and Boulder City still stands as one of only two cities in Nevada that prohibits gambling, with alcohol only being legal since 1969.

The town isn’t looking to limit anyone’s enjoyment, but rather guarantee that everyone has a safe time doing it. There’s a lot of people who agree with Boulder City’s small town charm.

In 2009 Money Magazine ranked it 6th on the annual list of the top 25 places to retire in the United States, based upon affordable housing, medical care, tax rates and arts and leisure.

So what is there to do? Well any trip to the area must include a stop at the aforementioned Hoover Dam.

The Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum tells the story of the Boulder Canyon Project as it was experienced by those who were brave enough to endure the once desolate location to construct it.

Boulder City museum offers three-dimensional and interactive displays that help visitors understand the social and economic forces of the 1929 Stock Market Crash and Depression that drove thousands of unemployed workers to the Nevada desert.

The photographs and artifacts are amazing, and as you view them the sounds of construction ringing off the walls of Black Canyon reinforce the danger the workers endured.

If after visiting the dam you yearn for a more up close water excursion, Evolution Expeditions offers kayaking. Guides will show you a side of Las Vegas that you never knew existed, including up-close views of the Hoover Dam, the wonders of the Black Canyon, and the peaceful Lake Mead National Recreation area.

It’s a chance to be exposed to many types of wildlife and an opportunity to explore local hot springs, or hike the rocks and canyons. Less experienced folks can learn from some of the best guides anywhere while riding in state of the art kayaks.

Bootleg Canyon Flight Lines allows you to view the area from a different perspective-from above. It’s a zip line experience with stunning and face paced views of Lake Mead and the Eldorado Canyon. While not for the faint of heart, it’s a worthwhile excursion for the true adventurer.

Guides make sure it’s a safe experience for beginners and veterans alike. Skydive Las Vegas offers another aerial view of the area at fair prices.

If jumping out of a perfectly good airplane is not really your style, the Boulder City golf course and golf club offers a breathtaking locale for a relaxing day of putting.

Green fees are very competitive, and the club has arranged visitor specials with the Hacienda Hotel to offer golf and accommodations for as low as $60 a night. That’s a great value. Check their web site and give them a call to arrange.
